The Fenwick Foundation was established to honour the memory of a remarkable young man and to carry on his dream. Fen was a man of energy, compassion and vision. He was “hands on”, generous with his time and expertise and in forming relationships, which ultimately led to his greatest wish: to establish real communities of people.
Fenwick Joyce was 29 years old when he died. The year before he completed his Bachelor of Building at the University of Technology of Sydney. He was posthumously awarded his degree with Honours.
In his last year of study, Fen and other final year students went to Koh Ramdual, an island near Phnom Penh in Cambodia. The students worked there to build a community centre and this experience inspired Fen, and his close friend and fellow student, Tom Jenkins, to continue their involvement at Koh Ramdual. Fen was so moved by working with this group of people that he decided to contribute in some personal way to the development of this South East Asian community.
Before realising his dream, Fen passed away suddenly and tragically but the Foundation, established in his name, continues his vision of developing not just Koh Ramdual but many neighbourhoods across Cambodia and beyond.
As a company limited by guarantee and incorporated under the Corporations Act, the Fenwick Foundation is committed to assisting people in developing communities become self sufficient through infrastructure projects and the direct provision of resources for ongoing construction within these villages.
Our current project is to raise money to put towards a roof on the community centre at Koh Ramdual.
Fen’s Dream
“Fen thought about other people, particularly the underprivileged or the minority. He loved children and found joy in their joy.
His dream was to build a better future for the disadvantaged. By build he meant actual hands on construction of homes, schools and community centres.
He thought it would be a great achievement if the money that was raised went straight to the community’s that needed it most.
After his trip to Koh Ramdual he told me about the women who had nowhere to sit together to make their craft.
He had a big heart and love to share. Most of all there was a wildness and freedom of spirit about him that he wanted to share with the world.
In setting up the foundation we honour the memory of our Fantastic Fen to make his dream a reality.”
Mary Joyce, Fen’s mother.
